Musical nest
Ben van Gelder is a young Dutch saxophonist. He grew up in an musical environment. His father is co-owner of a well-known jazz record store and his mother has a classical background. At an age of 11 years old he started playing the saxophone and at an early stage of his education saxophonists like Simon Rigter and Benjamin Herman were his teachers. Quickly after that the performances followed. Ben van Gelder won the first prize at the Princes Christina Jazzcontest with his older brother, pianist Gideon van Gelder.
Het followed the preparation study of the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Finally he was the second European person ever to get the Stan/Clifford Brown Fellowship, which gave him access to the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York.
New York
From that moment on he travels between the Netherlands and New York and studies with great people like Lee Konitz, Jimmy Halperin and George Coleman. At the moment he lives in New York, amazing everyone with his music. Like jazz critic Dick Hovenga writes: "It seems that we have lost definitely the brilliant saxophone/clarinet player Ben van Gelder to New York." With his quintet het released a second album last year: Reprise. The press was enthousiastic about the high level of the musicians (especially Ben van Gelder). "Boy wonder of the Dutch jazz "(NRC), "lyric, careless, sensitive" (het Parool), "incredible in his kind!" (DH), "biggest young dutch jazz talent of this moment" (Volkskrant, 5-star rating), "one of those rare young musicians who establishes his individuality in three or four notes" (Artsjournal).
Quartet
Wageningen will be visited by a quartet with a very strong cast. Ben van Gelder at alto sax, Ambrose Akinmusire at the trumpet (remember this name), Craig Weinrib at drums and Matt Brewer at double bass. If you want to say later, I was there when these guys played in Wageningen, stop with what you are doing, call your mother to invite her and go together to the Junushoff at the 30th of October.
