Norwegian Mats Eilertsen is a special bass player from the Scandinavian jazz scene. He is known for his warm, lyrical bass playing; balanced and experimental at the same time. It is no coincidence that the latest album from this trio "Then Comes The Night" is released by the famous record label ECM.
Mats Eilertsen plays together with the bands from Wolfert Brederode, Tord Gustavsen and in the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. He also shared the stage with worldfamous stars such as Pat Metheny, Joshua Redman and Lee Konitz.
In the trio he is playing with the Norwegian Thomas Strønen on drums and the Dutch pianist
Harmen Fraanje. Thomas Strønen is described as a wizard on drums / percussion / electronics. His playing extends over an enormous musical territory, from electronics to acoustic chamber music. Even though he is technically strong, he emphasizes melody. Harmen Fraanje has proven himself to be one of the most impressive young pianists. Fraanje leads a few groups such as the Reijseger-Fraanje-Sylla trio, a quartet with Fredrik Ljungkvist, Clemens van der Feen & Tristan Renfrow, a duo with guitarist Anton Goudsmit and is part of Michael Moore Quartet. The result of the collaboration of these musicians is partly lyrical, partly atmospheric music that sounds different than you would expect from a jazz trio.
“Eilertsen with his dark sonorous bass sound, Strønen with his open percussive approach and Fraanje with his frugal, melodically circulating and shifting piano playing: these three musicians not only stay close to the origin but also close together. A blessing for the listener ”(WrittenInMusic).
