An unexpected past for the Dutch top jazz pianist. In his younger years, Rembrandt was an avid graffiti painter. Although he has focused on jazz for the past twenty years, Rembrandt has never forgotten the 'excitement' of graffiti. With the album Graffiti Jazz, Rembrandt gives musical form to the excitement and euphoria of illegal graffiti spraying. Improvised jazz sounds like a spray-painted graffiti piece. Jazz In your face.
Distinctive music like the street art you see in metropolises. Just as artist Banksy puts a work through the shredder, Rembrandt puts jazz rhythm in the blender on this album. Because: “One of my means to renew contemporary jazz is the characteristic rhythm of this trio. I deconstruct common jazz rhythms by performing longer time signatures, based on poetry, in Jazz.”
The trio takes listeners on a long stretch of tension in pieces such as 'Inside without knocking' and 'Skoeba'. Both compositions are
new finds in a catchy, funky 19/8 beat.
The album was recorded in the German Fattoria de Musica studio. Nine pieces were recorded there in two days: eight new compositions by Rembrandt plus the well-known hit 'Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover' by Paul Simon. Rembrandt: “That piece has a world-famous drum intro by Steve Gadd, I wanted to counter that with something new. It has become a prepared piano version.”
Rembrandt Frerich's Trio
The Rembrandt Frerichs trio is internationally known for a broad view and innovative collaborations that give contemporary jazz a new direction. The trio plays a pioneering role in collaborating with top European musicians, for example they gave concerts with Paolo Fresu, Vincent Peirani,Norma Winstone, Sylvain Rifflet & Perico Sambeat. Rembrandt presented an album 'Sehsucht' in the legendary jazz club Birdland in New York in 2012. Both in 2007 and 2014 there were Edison nominations. Rembrandt Frerichs, Tony
Overwater and Vinsent Planjer are a real working band: they rehearse weekly and have been touring all over the world for 14 years. A recent highlight was the double bill concert with Chick Corea at the legendary jazz club Ronnie Scott's in London. As the opening act of the Taichun Jazz Festival (Taiwan), they played for 60,000 enthusiastic jazz lovers and tonight they play twice in a corona setting for 30 people. An excellent opportunity!
The current corona measures apply to this concert. This means that the room can be filled to a maximum of 2/3 (max 130 visitors) and that you must be able to show a corona check app in combination with an ID. It takes some effort, but you will get an unforgettable concert in return...
