Un témoin dans la ville

In Wageningen, we'll be starting Saturday, November 1st at 3:30 PM at Visum Mundi with the French film "Un témoin dans la ville." A true film noir from 1959, Un témoin dans la ville (Dutch: A Witness in the City) was directed by Édouard Molinaro. The film is considered a hidden gem within the French crime genre of its time.

The film centers on Ancelin, played by Lino Ventura, who seeks revenge after a friend of his is killed. The friend was murdered by his mistress, but the case is covered up as an accident. However, Ancelin knows that a taxi driver witnessed what really happened. He begins a relentless hunt for that witness, leading to a thrilling game of cat and mouse through the streets of Paris.

In "Un témoin dans la ville," jazz music plays a strikingly important role, both in terms of content and style. The soundtrack was composed and performed by Barney Wilen, a leading French jazz saxophonist, also known for his work with Miles Davis (Ascenseur pour l’échafaud, 1958).

The jazz music perfectly underscores the film noir-like atmosphere of the story: nighttime streets, moral ambiguity, loneliness, menace. Jazz is not merely a decorative element here, but a vehicle for atmosphere. Wilen's sultry saxophone notes exude the film's tension and existential nature.

The protagonist, Ancelin (Lino Ventura), is a silent, cold-blooded avenger. The music emphasizes his inner turmoil, without him having to express it himself. The jazz sounds sometimes nervous, sometimes languid, thus reflecting his state of mind. Instead of dialogue, the film often lets the music do the talking.

Live jazz music and dinner

After this first (exciting) film, it's time to relax! From Visum Mundi, we walk 50 meters to the adjacent historic Hotel De Wereld. Jazz in Wageningen, in collaboration with Hotel De Wereld, offers live jazz music from 5:30 PM. Singer Eva Kieboom will perform alongside guitarist Maurice Rugebregt.

During the performance, you can enjoy a delicious Jazz & Burger (€ 19,50) or a three-course culinary menu (€ 45,00).

Op de site off Hotel De Wereld your can order your ticket for the dinner with live jazz music.

Eva Kieboom & Maurice Rugebregt

Edison Award-winning singer Eva Kieboom combines jazz and pop with Brazilian influences. This pairs perfectly with guitarist Maurice Rugebregt. His music also combines jazz with Brazilian influences like Bossa Nova and samba. Plenty of ingredients, then, for wonderful music to accompany a delicious meal.

Köln '75 (Keith Jarrett)

After dinner and the performance, we walk back to Visum Mundi, where the second film/documentary begins at 8:00 PM.

The best-selling improvised solo piano concerto of all time is undoubtedly "The Köln Concert" by Keith Jarrett. A concert with a bizarre origin story. We follow Vera Brandes, who, at eighteen, had the audacity to organize this concert at the Cologne Opera. A concert where everything went wrong, but which nevertheless became a hit with millions of jazz lovers worldwide. Improvisation of the purest kind by Keith Jarrett, because the musical theme of the concert is a direct result of the gong in the foyer that calls the guests to take their seats... (Really?...Really!)

We can only give you one piece of advice: sit back and be amazed at everything that goes wrong. And if at any point you think nothing more can go wrong... well, it does! And yet, in the end, something sensational comes out!
