Who is Miran Noh
Miran Noh is a pianist, arranger, teacher, and composer born in South Korea. She studied classical composition at Chugye Art University in Seoul and at the Codarts Conservatory in Rotterdam, where she was taught by Johan Clement, Loran Witteveen, Marc van Roon, and Franz von Chossy. Miran Noh is involved with various bands, such as the NOHMI Quintet (her project), Su Nichel (jazz), Eleutheria (jazz), Sophie Zelan (soul/pop), Hatkalya (jazz), and Toni Trio (tango).
NOHMI, winner The records on Tour 2025
With her own project NOHMI, Miran Noh participated in the Keep an Eye the Records competition, this time in a sextet configuration. In 2025, NOHMI won this competition. This means that, following their debut album “A bird at the edge,” they were able to create and release a second album. This new album, titled “Brightness and darkness,” will be released in early January 2026.
In addition to being able to produce a second album, an organized tour through the Netherlands is part of the prize. In early 2026, this tour will take NOHMI to Tivoli Vredenburg, the Bimhuis, the Transition Festival, and Jazz in Wageningen, among others.
Sanne Huijbregts
NOHMI is a special project by the young, talented Miran Noh. Partly special in the sense that she has gathered a diverse group of top young musicians around her. Think, for example, of vibraphonist Sanne Huijbregts. This vibraphonist is rapidly making waves with her band Sanne Sanne, fueled in part by a successful show at North Sea Jazz in 2025.
Sanne Huijbregts, together with Miran Noh and the other 4 musicians, creates a rock-solid jazz combination that will perform surprising jazz music with a touch of classical here and there.
Brightness & Darkness
Feeling. You cannot ignore it on Brightness & Darkness, the second album by NOHMI. For this musical adventure, South Korean pianist Miran Noh has gathered the cream of the new jazz generation around her.
Noh is a remarkable musician, rooted in both classical music and jazz, and you can hear it. Together with her band members, she moves effortlessly between those worlds. The influences of her great heroes, the French composers Ravel and Debussy, resonate clearly on this album.
Like a true impressionist, Noh plays with light and shadow. The light brings hope and connection, while the darkness captures emotion, struggle, and societal layers. Together, they form a play that allows you to look inward as well as outward, at a world full of imbalance and silent tensions, but also full of beauty.
The Records jury
The jury wrote: ‘We were impressed by the way they combine classical influences with a more traditional jazz sound. They experiment with form and orchestration in a very original way. Their music is complex, but still resonates with the listener and remains accessible.
