Jasper Somsen Invites ...
Also in the 2024-2025 season, four Jasper Somsen Invites … concerts are planned on Thursday evenings in Café Loburg. As in previous years, the concert series is a collaboration between Loburg Live, Jazz in Wageningen, PopUPop and (every now and then) Nationaal PodiumPlan. For the regular enthusiasts and people who would like to experience the best jazz from the Netherlands in an accessible way, here are the dates for the agenda: October 3, 2024, December 19, 2024, February 13, 2025 and April 10, 2025.
The successful concert series by the Wageningen double bassist/composer/producer is already in its eleventh year and has become an indispensable part of the rich arts & culture program that Wageningen offers. On Thursday, February 13, 2025, the Brazilian pianist and composer Henrique Gomide will be our guest.
Jasper and Henrique met during the international networking days "Jazzahead 2023" in Bremen. It turned out to work out great, both musically as well as socially, so naturally Gomide landed at the top of the (long) wish list for the Jasper Somsen Invites … series.
Henrique Gomide
Brazilian pianist Henrique Gomide has a diverse musical background that ranges from classical music to the roots of Brazilian music and jazz. Throughout his career, Gomide has collaborated and recorded with renowned Brazilian musicians such as Toninho Horta, YamanduCosta, Guinga, Mateus Aleluia and Paulo Bellinati, as well as European jazz greats Tony Lakatos, John Ruocco, Matthias Schriefl and others.
With his piano trio, Caixa Cubo, from São Paulo, he has released seven albums and has performed extensively in Brazil, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, England and Mozambique. In 2024, the trio released their debut album under the British label Far Out Recordings. The song Vaidoso by Moacir Santos is one of the tracks on this album.
In 2023, Henrique Gomide released his first solo album, Portais (Challenge Records) to international acclaim. An impression of Gomide's solo album Portais can be seen on Youtube.
Together with Dutch violinist Daphne Oltheten, Gomide forms the Duo Brasis, which has recorded albums with works by Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms and two albums with chamber arrangements of MPB classics (= Brazilian Popular Music) and hidden gems. A gem can be found in the YouTube video Rosa by Pixinguinha.
During his study trip, Henrique Gomide studied jazz piano with Geri Allen, Juraj Stanik, Michele Rosewoman and Oscar Perez, as well as classical piano with Hermes Jacchieri, José Eduardo Martins, Paulo Álvares and David Witten, among others.
Since 2023, Henrique Gomide has been teaching piano at the Jazz & Pop department of the ArtEZ Conservatory in Arnhem and is therefore a fellow teacher of double bassist Jasper Somsen.
As usual we start at 20:30 hrs
Just like most of the previous Jasper Somsen Invites … the concert starts at 20:30 (two sets, with intermission).
