Undercurrent trio & Suzan Veneman

The music of Undercurrent Trio & Suzan Veneman offers a wide range of moods. Melodies from the heart tell a story, while the band moves through musical landscapes with varying timbres and contrasts. Adventurous musical styles create cinematic music in dreamy colors, dark, somber, and thick grooves, or sharp, incisive political commentary.
The four musicians explore captivating and sometimes compelling compositions by taking considerable freedom of expression and creating strong interplay and vibrant improvisations. The unusual instrumentation of trumpet, clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone, guitar, and drums offers the listener a fresh sound. The use of musical space is a strong point of the group.

Cloud Song

Cloud Song is the quartet's latest album. It was released in September 2024 by ZenneZ Records. The release has been showered with positive reviews, including:

Jazzism on Cloud Song:
Imaginative songs with unique names, performed by a solid core of distinctive voices. On Cloud Song, they've invited a fourth kindred spirit: Suzan Veneman, a delightfully idiosyncratic trumpeter with a stunning sound. From the dramatic and restrained opening to the unbridled ending, Spaargaren and Veneman blast through the raw material of Wat Nu Weer (What Now Again). A composition that most likely looks different on paper than it sounded in the Hilversum studio in October 2022. And as the title suggests, the wind section of Voors En Tegens alternately darkens and brightens the autumn air. Spaargaren, playing his bass clarinet, draws the listener into a compelling, moving story. He is then increasingly supported by Veneman, who eventually takes over the narrative until the story concludes in harmony. With songs like Lonesome Gaucho and Couleur Locale, the four strike a beautiful, if possible, accurate chord. The narrative takes center stage, and it's wonderful that Veneman is invited to participate, as her poetic voice occasionally inspires great rapture. The album concludes with the fitting encore, titled Kattenbel. Master Spaargaren takes center stage, carrying a spicy solo from the phlegmatic Celano.
