Shuteen Erdenebaatar, a worldwide big jazztalent
Born in 1998 in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar, Erdenebaatar is one of the sensations of her generation! After her classical studies in Mongolia, her love of jazz brought her to Germany, where she studied jazz piano and jazz composition. Quite unusually for pianists, she quickly developed her own voice. This voice forms a unique sound with her yearning melodies, enriched with deep and expressive harmonies and rhythms. Her classical foundation is unmistakably present throughout, clearly evident in her technical brilliance, stylistic finesse, and the thematic structure of her compositions.
After her debut album 'Rising Sun', released in September 2023 on the renowned New York label Motéma Music, she was quickly recognized and celebrated as one of the most promising rising stars of the European and global jazz scene. This album with her quartet caused a sensation in the press and among the public! How thrilled we are to welcome her to Jazz in Wageningen!
Rising star artist of the year
Despite her young age, Shuteen Erdenebaatar has already won a whole trophy cabinet full of awards. But last summer, she achieved an absolute highlight: the globally renowned and authoritative Downbeat Magazine named her a top 25 (#21) in its ranking of the world's most promising jazz talents!
Nils Kugelmann, nomination German Record Critics Award
Born in Munich in 1996, Ils Kugelmann discovered music at a young age. He began playing the recorder and quickly expanded to piano, clarinet, and double bass. At eleven, he wrote his first composition for clarinet. At fifteen, he wrote his first piece for big band, and before high school, he had already composed orchestral works and two musicals. These premiered under his direction in prestigious venues such as the Herkulessaal in Munich and Schloss Nymphenburg.
After graduating in 2015, Kugelmann studied jazz double bass at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich with Henning Sieverts. He received his bachelor's degree in 2020 and his master's degree in 2022. During his studies, he gained recognition as a versatile sideman and performed with ensembles such as the Benny Golson Quartet, Trio Elf, and Johannes Enders.
Stormy Beauty op ACT Music
In 2023, his debut album, Stormy Beauty, was released on ACT Music with Luca Zambito (piano) and Sebastian Wolfgruber (drums). The recording was enthusiastically received and promptly nominated for the German Record Critics Award.
Thanks to his versatility as a bassist, clarinetist, and composer, Nils Kugelmann is one of the most compelling new voices on the European jazz scene.
