ToonKunstKoor goes jazz
Toonkunstkoor Wageningen is a large mixed choir of approximately 75 members, often supplemented by project members. It is one of the larger choirs in the region. They sing classical choral music, accompanied by professional orchestras, pianists or organists at concerts, and with professional vocal soloists. They usually give two concerts a year, regularly seeking collaboration with various Wageningen groups such as schools, dance groups and theatre makers.
This time a special concert for the choir. No classical choral music this time, but a trip to Jazz. And even more special, the choir is accompanied by the leading Cologne big band the Subway Jazz Orchestra!
Subway Jazz Orchestra big band
The German big bands affiliated with the major German broadcasters enjoy a great status worldwide. The Subway Jazz Orchestra big band from Cologne has close ties with these broadcasting orchestras. Many members of the 18-piece Cologne orchestra also play or played in, for example, the WDR big band.
The ToonKunstKoor will enjoy an unprecedented accompaniment this evening. This will definitely be a treat!
The Concert of Sacred Music (Duke Ellington)
“The Concert of Sacred Music” by Duke Ellington was first performed on September 16, 1965 at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, California, USA. The official album, A Concert of Sacred Music, was later recorded on December 26, 1965 at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York. Richard S. Ginell’s Allmusic review awarded the album five stars and stated: “The concert draws on Ellington’s roots in show business and African-American culture, as well as his deep religious faith.” Ebony magazine called the piece “historic” and situated it as part of a larger movement that brought together jazz and religion in the mid-1960s.
Six Pieces (Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie)
A Little Jazz Mass (Bob Chilcott)
Bob Chilcott's "A Little Jazz Mass" was first performed in June 2004 at the Crescent City Choral Festival in New Orleans. As a child, Bob Chilcott sang in the choir at King's College, Cambridge. Later in life, he sang as a tenor, and composed and arranged for the choir. In addition to his international work, he is now a guest conductor for the BBC Singers. He writes in his foreword to "A Little Jazz Mass" that he has always loved jazz. Early in his career, he worked occasionally as an arranger for the now defunct BBC Radio Orchestra.
