Sam Newbould Quintet

The Sam Newbould Quintet is formed around saxophonist Sam Newbould who was born and raised in the Northern English countryside. He now lives and works in Amsterdam, which is also the home base of his Quintet. The Quintet features influences from Radiohead, Wayne Shorter, English folk music, and 20th century classical music, which are fused into a blend of beautiful melodies, lush harmony and the energy of progressive rock. The Quintet won the 'Keep an Eye Records Tour' (formerly YoungVIP award) and during this concert you can hear why this award is well deserved. We think we will hear a lot more from these musicians.

Heavy weather

The Quintet released a 2nd album 'Bogus Notus' in March 2021, which received 4 stars from UK Vibe.

Bogus Notus is a coined word that describes something that is beautiful and intriguing, but also clumsy and inappropriate. For Sam Newbould it is a characterization of his upbringing in the north of England. Where despite the beauty of the landscape there is always the threat of heavy weather and flooding, where modernity disrupts old habits and where those who deviate from the social norm run the risk of exile.

Line up

Sam Newbould (alto saxophone/composition), Bernard van Rossum (tenor saxophone), Youngwoo Lee (piano), Daniel Nagel (bass) and Guy Salomon (drums).

What is the press saying?

"The dark and often brooding atmospheres conjured by the album cast their own weighty spell" (All About Jazz, US)

“A magnificent set that will put this band on the map to watch in 2020” (Jazz Views)

“Sam Newbould is an asset to the Dutch jazz scene.” (jazz music)

"Compulsive Listening" (Bebop Spoken Here, UK)
