Ben Wendel is a saxophonist that you might have missed if you live in Wageningen, but who has a great resume as a musician, composer and producer. Born in Vancouver, raised in Los Angeles and now working from New York. Played not only with big jazz names like Tigran Hamasyan, Antonio Sanchez, Gerald Clayton, Eric Harland, Taylor Eigsti, Linda May Han Oh and Moonchild but also with pop artists like Daedalus, Snoop Dog, Prince and Christina Aguilera. He is one of the founders of Kneebody, was nominated for a Grammy, won several awards, made many albums for various labels, including 5 solo albums, made film scores and did many sounding musical projects. In short: a musician you really don't want to miss.
And if that's not enough reason to listen, he has also gathered a great band, each with top musicians for whom you would come to Junushoff alone. Due to the corona vicissitudes, the tour and the line-up have been adjusted, but you can expect a star team on stage. In addition to Ben Wendel on sax, Nate Wood on drums, Joe Sanders on bass, Shai Maestro on Fender Rhodes and Sullivan Fortner on piano. We could hardly have imagined it better ourselves.
Ben Wendel calls the band High Heart, an allusion to “High Art, Low Art”. Wendel says: “This project reflects my continued effort to create art that is personal and relevant in an increasingly impersonal time.
The song titles refer to different challenges I've experienced while interfacing with a global audience. For example, the song 'More' refers to the dangers of technological overuse and losing perspective, while the song 'High Heart' refers to the human desire to connect and express through these new mediums at the risk of feeling isolated and cut off. Ultimately, High Heart is a project of hope, and for me, a focused and personal statement in a time where it has become harder for all artists to find their way through the noise.”
