Workshop laatste dinsdag van de maand
To foster a vibrant jazz scene in our city, we need more than just concerts by top-tier jazz musicians; there must also be opportunities for experimentation and learning. That is why, on the last Tuesday of every month, we host workshops and jam sessions at Visum Mundi. If you would like to stay informed, please let us know by sending a message to jamsessie@jazzinwageningen.nl
Workshop Daan Kleijn
Northern European Jazz Talent Award
Daan Kleijn (1989) grew up in Groningen, where he studied at the Prince Claus Conservatoire. During his studies, he received several awards, including the Northern European Jazz Talent Award. Thanks to a full scholarship from the Huygens Talent Program, he was given the opportunity to continue his education at the prestigious New York University.
Blue Note, NY
Today, Daan is active worldwide as a jazz guitarist, dividing his time between the Netherlands and New York. He performs regularly at renowned New York jazz clubs, such as the Blue Note, Birdland, and Smalls Jazz Club. His tours have taken him to countries including China, Greece, Switzerland, the United States, Poland, Italy, Germany, and Belgium. As a sideman, he features on numerous albums, collaborating with some of the most prominent artists on the contemporary scene, such as Aaron Parks, Rodney Green, Billy Drummond, Sam Yahel, Rich Perry, Glenn Zaleski, and Mike Rodriguez.
Albums
Following a “brilliant debut album” (De Telegraaf), Daan Kleijn presented his second CD, “Passages,” in 2018. It is an inspiring album that—through a repertoire of apparent simplicity—showcases the expressive power of jazz. Refreshing original compositions, melancholic Brazilian songs, and carefully selected jazz standards highlight the “enormous dynamic range of this trio, which is simply magical” (Jazzpodium DE). All of this is enhanced by the beautiful, spacious acoustics of the Bethlehem Church in Amsterdam-Noord, where the album was recorded.
Experienced teacher
As an educator, Daan has given masterclasses in the United States, Europe, and Asia; he also serves as a jazz guitar instructor at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts at Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts, as well as at the HKU (University of the Arts Utrecht).
Furthermore, Daan holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology, earned from the Open University.
