For a vibrant jazz scene in our city, we need not only concerts by the very best jazz musicians, but also opportunities to experiment and learn. Therefore, we organize workshops and jam sessions on the last Tuesday of the month in the Junushoff theater café. Workshop Jasper Somsen
On Tuesday, February 24 and Tuesday, March 31, the workshop will be hosted by double bassist Jasper Somsen. It’s true! Our very own Wageningen world star is coming—by popular demand—to give the workshop, and he is really looking forward to it, he assured Jazz in Wageningen!
Who is Jasper Somsen
The Dutch / Wageningen-based double bassist, composer, and producer Jasper Somsen is a versatile musician with an open mind. He is primarily known as a jazz musician, but his interests and expertise also encompass classical music, pop, world music, film music, and theater productions.
Jasper Somsen has collaborated with some of the best musicians in the international jazz scene, including Peter Erskine, Enrico Pieranunzi, Joey Calderazzo, Jeff Ballard, John Beasley, Jean-Michel Pilc, Eric Marienthal, Bob Sheppard, Seamus Blake, Jorge Rossy, Kendrick Scott, Justin Faulkner, André Ceccarelli, Gary Husband, Gabriele Mirabassi, and Paolo Fresu.
Jasper also has a soft spot for Nordic Jazz. And we were able to enjoy this at Jazz in Wageningen in 2025 when he performed alongside Carsten Lindholm and Jan Gunnar Hoff.
Edison World/Jazz Award & Grammy nomination
In 2020, Jasper won the Edison World/Jazz Award with the band of Portuguese singer Maria Mendes. Subsequently, four Grammy nominations followed with the same band. Jasper performs worldwide and can be heard on approximately 60 albums, video and film music productions. In addition to his busy schedule as a musician and studio producer, he is a lecturer at the ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem.

Your €25 ticket covers participation on both days.
Jamsessie februari 2026
At 9:00 PM, the workshop seamlessly transitions into a jam session, which is free for the public to attend. The session is led by session leader Eric de Zeeuw, who ensures a relaxed and smooth flow. A sound engineer will be present to ensure everything sounds its best.
The music ranges from jazz standards to excursions into funk and soul — and beyond, depending on the vibe of the evening.
Musicians can play along for free. Registration is not mandatory, but is appreciated so that we can take your attendance into account. After registering, you will receive the musical pieces that serve as the basis for this jam session.

Backline
There is a sound system, microphones, and several DI boxes. A simple drum kit can be arranged, but you can also bring your own. If you have questions about sound, backline, or instruments, you can send an email.
