Last tuesday off the month

 

For a vibrant jazz scene in our city, we need not only concerts by the very best jazz musicians, but also opportunities to experiment and learn. So, on the last Tuesday of the month, we organize workshops and jam sessions in the Junushoff theater café. Workshop Yoràn Vroom

 

Original drummer

 

Yoràn Vroom (1991) is a Dutch  jazz drummer, composer, and teacher at the Amsterdam Conservatory. He is regarded as one of the most original drummers in the Netherlands.

 

Style

 

His style is deeply rooted in West African and Caribbean rhythms, and breaks down traditional roles in music. “In my band, the Western separation between rhythm and harmony does not exist,” he says. “We play total football – everyone can pick up the melody, even the drums.

His compositions are based on a mix of modern jazz and West African rhythms, among other things. To this end, Vroom constantly seeks global inspiration to tell his own story. This musical quest takes him back to Senegal, where 25 years earlier, as a nine-year-old boy, he received percussion lessons from the Guinean master drummer Famoudou Konaté.

 

Group of friends

 

Vroom performs with his own band “Group of Friends”. Vroom also plays along with other band leaders such as Susanne Alt.

Master of Drums

 

In 2025, John Appel made a documentary called “Master of Drums” about Yoràn Vroom. This documentary can be viewed on NTR documentaries (Het uur van de Wolf) "Master of Drums".

 

Vroom was clear about the title of the documentary: “I would never call myself that.”

Location workshop

 

The workshop led by Yoràn Vroom takes place in the historic monumental building (the auditorium) of Visum Mundi in the Vrijheidskwartier.

Jamsession

 

Following the workshop, the jam session will take place as always.
It runs from 21:00 to 23:00 and is free for musicians and the public.
