Who is Nabou Claerhout

Nabou Claerhout chose the trombone at the age of nine — an unexpected choice that has since turned into a bullseye. Today, she is regarded as one of the most promising and innovative jazz trombonists in the Benelux.

After her education at the arts high school in Brussels, she continued her studies at Codarts in Rotterdam, where she further developed her own musical voice. That voice is characterized by a warm, expressive sound and an exciting balance between lyricism and experimentation. Claerhout moves effortlessly between modern jazz, free improvisation, and subtle influences from classical music.

As a composer, she creates layered, open compositions in which interaction and spontaneity take center stage — music that lives in the moment and surprises time and again.

Nabou Claerhout is coming to Wageningen with her own quartet, which has been playing with a fixed lineup since 2016. Over the years, the ensemble has developed into a close-knit, adventurous formation and proudly presents their third album this year.

INDIGO her 3rd quartet album

Indigo is Nabou Claerhout's third quartet album and ushers in an intriguing new phase in her artistic development. Following Hubert (2019) and You Know (2021), she presents a renewed N∆BOU lineup with Trui Amerlinck (double bass), Gijs Idema (electric guitar), and Daniel Jonkers (drums). Together, they explore a musical landscape centered on change, renewal, and shifting human relationships — a powerful next step following their firm roots in the Belgian and Dutch jazz scene, and a reflection of Claerhout's growing international reputation.

Indigo is an album of transformation. New collaborations, fresh perspectives, and deeply personal compositions come together in music that is simultaneously raw and refined, intimate and intense. The sound world moves from dreamy and melancholic to playful and groovy, with a natural flow between still moments and energetic outbursts.

Haunting pieces such as Light Blue Shawl and Consent touch upon personal stories, while a layered suite—including Ruin & Redemption and Lost Soul—unfolds in ever-changing forms and textures. Claerhout’s trombone remains the driving force: warm and expressive, sometimes subtly distorted, then again bare and vulnerable, with solo interludes that lend the music an almost tangible tension.

London Jazz News (UK)

There was real star quality in her soloing: song tone, strong line, real presence. (...) Claerhout was a new name to me and is definitely one to watch out for.''

NRC (NL)

'With her warm trombone sound, which does not immediately erupt into outbursts but builds melodic lines intelligently, Claerhout manages to create a different atmosphere every time. (...) A band to keep an eye on.'
